HEALTHY SKIN STARTS ON THE INSIDE

Posted by Naturopath . on

You may think that skin quality is all to do with face care and what’s applied to the surface, but this is in fact not true. While the creams, cleanses and masks we use do affect to a degree- (where, in my opinion, natural is always better), the skin is far more complicated than that, and aside from genetics, what we put in our body is what truly influences the quality, tone, vibrancy and texture of the skin.

Here are 3 simple tips to improve any skin.

-Probiotics or ‘good gut bacteria’ has been found to be very beneficial to skin quality. Good gut bacteria helps to digest food properly, increase our immune system but also puts a dampener on inflammatory conditions- such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. While yogurt sources can be good, supplemental form is more powerful and contains less sugars and dairy which are often triggers for poor skin health.

-Flaxseed oil is wonderful for the skin. Because the skin is made of layers where one is fatty, the types of fats we choose to eat end up contributing to this layer. So eating a diet high in saturated fats or trans fats will often lead to poor skin quality, whilst the omega 3 and 6 fatty acids present in flaxseed oil, improves the skins tone, vibrancy and texture. About 1-2 tablespoons a day near food is best. Always buy it from, and keep it in the fridge for oil stability.

-How often do we stop and think about how many times we are chewing a mouthful of food? Well this exact process affects our skin greatly- particularly pore size. The basic rule of thumb for the greatest health is to chew 30-40 a mouthful; and yes, soup is tricky. A great old Naturopathic philosophy is ‘Drink your food and eat your drink’, meaning, chew your food so thoroughly it becomes a liquid, and chew even whilst drinking because the chewing process stimulates greater breakdown of nutrients, digestion and absorption.
